DEEP DIVE INTO MY STORY
In 2000, the world was recovering from the fear of the Millennium Bug, which turned out to be unfounded. During the same period, I found myself facing a personal challenge: mandatory military service, an experience that would put my life on hold for 11 months.
I chose civil service and was assigned to the NGO Terres des Hommes in Milan, an organization dedicated to humanitarian projects for children in developing countries and in war zones.
Initially, my task seemed to be monotonous and lacking in prospects: copying, stuffing envelopes, and managing correspondence for donors.
As Buddha said: "There are no pure lands or impure lands, the place where you are is the Buddha's Land."
I decided to give my all in every task entrusted to me, turning each task into an opportunity to demonstrate my worth and uniqueness.
here with Father Stephan Lim, chaplain of the UN army. Thanks to him, once a week I had access to their base camp and could send emails home and to the office, the only way to communicate with the outside world.
My dedication did not go unnoticed. After a few months, the CEO of Terres des Hommes offered me an extraordinary task: to start a project in East Timor, a war zone where the UN army had just intervened. The goal was to survey children in the villages of the Lautem province. I had no experience in international cooperation, but my multi-potential approach allowed me to see innovative solutions that a specialized expert might have overlooked.
INNOVATIVE.
VISIONARY.
The Italian legislation represented an apparently insurmountable obstacle: conscientious objectors could not leave alone or without a military escort in a war zone. Every attempt to obtain authorization seemed destined to fail. However, I never stopped believing in my worth and continued to fight. After months of letters, emails, and appeals even to the Prime Minister and the President of the Italian Republic, I finally obtained permission to leave to East Timor.
I stayed in East Timor for a month and I was responsible of all the logistics, inventing a process to take photos of children and correctly catalog them to record their data and life story.
I organized an on-site English mini-course for some local island boys who helped me translate the forms from tribal local languages to English.
This project was a success, and I was the first and only conscientious objector in Italy to achieve such a milestone.
I turned the "impossible" of Italian law into "possible". I laid the groundwork for other conscientious objectors in the future to follow this path.
My experience has allowed me to inspire other conscientious objectors, encouraging them to make innovative use of their time. Shortly before my discharge in November 2000, I received a merit plaque for the civil service provided in East Timor during a press conference at the Library of Montecitorio.
